Ben Davis *: Ben has seven years experience as a translator, including five years in medical translation. In September 2007, he established Sazanami Translations Inc., a company headquartered in Tokyo specializing in translation of medical and pharmaceutical documents from Japanese to English. Ben likes to take advantage of the geographical flexibility available as a translator and has worked from Hokkaido the last two winters while pursuing winter sports.

David Harvey: David Harvey (BSc; Graduate Diplomas: Banking and Finance / Japanese Studies; Associate of Music Australia) is a director of the Asian Finance Group, a research consultancy focusing on banking and finance and responsible for devising content for the Mizuho Securities Research and Links website in English. David held various positions with the Industrial Bank of Japan/ Mizuho Financial Group between 1984 and 2000 (in Japan and Australia) and has been working (on a non-exclusive basis) as an independent consultant and translator to members of the Mizuho Financial Group since 2000. He also undertakes freelance translation, specializing in finance and legal related translations.

Matthew Heaton: Matthew Heaton has been living in Japan for a total of 7 years, and has worked in project management and business development for Elanex Japan KK (http://www.elanex.com) since the opening of its Tokyo office in 2003. Over that time the project management team has grown from 4 to more than 20 globally. Matthew is now chiefly involved in business development, but still plays an active role in team building. Elanex looks to build its team of professional translators through active involvement in JAT, and is an IJET sponsor.

Bill Lise *: Bill Lise first came to Japan about 40 years ago as a language specialist for the US Navy. After returning to the US and obtaining an engineering degree, he worked in millimeter microwave and fiber optics laboratories of the then Western Electric. In the mid-1970s he joined a major manufacturer of electronic test and measuring instruments, founded its Japan branch, and served as its first branch manager. He transitioned to translation and interpreting as a full-time activity and established a small translation company with a focus on patent translation for Japanese manufacturers and interpreting for patent litigation involving Japanese entities.
Jeff Loucks: Jeff is in the process of leveraging his experience in corporate communications and operating companies in Japan by building a translation and publications agency called No Moss ("a rolling stone gathers..."). Our principal focus through 2008 is on investor relations. From 2009 we will expand into legal documentation and patent translation.

Have since worked primarily on multi-billion dollar litigation as both deposition and trial interpreter and translator, and as a conference interpreter at ministerial and UN conferences for nearly 15 years. Minoru Mochizuki: I live in Shizuoka-ken. This is the first time I ever participate in IJET since IJET8 held in Sheffield in 1997 if I am correct. I have never been to Okinawa and I believe Okinawa is not really a part of Japan, and that's why I am lured to it.

Paul Sminkey *: Teach literature, speech, translation, and conversation at Okinawa International University. Although I do not have any professional experience as a translator, I enjoy translating literature and other material as a hobby. A Rabbit's Eyes, my translation of Usagi no Me, was published by Vertical Press in 2006. In addition to work that I do as part of my university job (translation of bulletins, memos, university correspondence, etc.), I also occasionally do work for local translation companies. My primary interest, however, is literary translation. Recently, I finished a translation of Sakiyama Tami's "Shimagomoru" [Island Confinement]. I am also interested in the work of Medoruma Shun, Matayoshi Eiki, and other Okinawan writers. I enjoy translation and hope to improve my skills. I look forward to learning more about translation through my involvement in JAT.
