要旨

(A) The market: A brief overview of the market for patent translation, including market size, types of patent translation, client demographics, the patent translation food chain, and rates. The recent trend of Japanese manufacturers removing Japanese patent attorneys from the translation loop will be covered.

(B) Different types of patent translation: Patent translation, which is different in many ways from other types of technical translation, is itself made up of a number of distinct subclasses, such as translation for filing and what is sometimes imprecisely referred to as “translation for information,” which often, unbeknownst to the translator, is something much more specific (for example, translation of an existing patent for the purpose of invalidating a patent that a client has been accused of infringing). Specific examples of patent translations for various purposes will be presented.

(C) Suggestions for newcomers wishing to start patent translation: Specific examples of acquiring patent translation clients will be discussed, and a list of resources will be distributed (and made available in expanded form shortly after the conference on the presenter’s corporate website).
