医療通訳を「専門職」として確立するため、上記の項目にある様々ヒントをご紹介いたします。

Healthcare Interpreting

It is not compulsory for the Japanese government or hospitals to provide health care services; so health care interpreting is not a profession but a volunteer job in Japan. Most of health care interpreters are not properly trained, and their language and interpreting skills are not good enough. The Japan Association for Health Care Interpreting in Japanese and English, which we call J.E., is working to promote health care interpreting as one kind of a new profession, the medical communicator, who is an expert of communicational skills for medical purposes. In this presentation, I will introduce several ideas, which enable volunteer health care interpreters to develop their professional career in the field of medical communications.

We will cover the following topics.

1. Roles of healthcare interpreter
2. Overview of healthcare interpreting in Japan
3. Basic healthcare interpreting skills
4. Issues of health care interpreting
5. Possible career development as a medical communicator
6. National Examination for Proficiency in English for Medical Purposes
