SIG Meetings

Join not one, two, or three but four special interest groups (SIGs) of the Japan Association of Translators (JAT) for two days of learning and networking at the National Olympics Memorial Youth Center in Yoyogi. The two-day event begins on Thursday, June 19 with a JATTOOLS meeting. On Friday, June 20, JATPHARMA meets all day and JATINT and JATLAW meet in the afternoon. The Friday meetings will end before the IJET Zenyasai in nearby Shibuya. Space is limited, so sign up now

 

 


Meeting Descriptions

JATTOOLS Meeting: 9:00 to early afternoon on Thursday, June 19 (Room 502). Limited to 35 participants. Free. The theme is interoperability. The morning sessions will cover converting web-based glossaries, a demo of DVX, and converting translation memories between CAT tools. Attendees will eat lunch together and then informally engage in geek talk in the afternoon (Emglish and japanese).

 

JATPATENT Meeting: 13:00 to 17:00 on Friday, June 20 (Room 306). Limited to 35 participants. Veteran patent translator Cliff Bender will lead an informal, moderated meeting to allow patent translators to talk about the issues they confront. Formation of an official patent SIG will also be discussed. Refreshments will be served. 

 

 

JATPHARMA Meeting: 9:00 to 17:00 on Friday, June 20 (Room 309). Limited to 90 participants. Sessions will cover medical and pharma resources, hospital and healthcare terminology, continuing professional development, and grammatical issues facing pharma translators.

 

JATINT Meeting: 13:00 to 18:00 on Friday, June 20 (Room 107). Limited to 35 participants. This meeting will feature two interpreting workshops, one by Izumi Suzuki titled “法廷通訳 WS / Court Interpreting Workshop” and another by Mamoru Tsuda titled “公益通訳翻訳への招待 / An Invitation to Koheki-Tsuuyaku-Honyaku.”

 

JATLAW Meeting: 13:00 to 17:00 on Friday, June 20 (Room 109). Limited to 35 participants. A hands-on J-to-E legal translation workshop led by Kyal Hill (JATLAW committee member). Translators of all levels are encouraged to attend. Some materials will be made available beforehand.

Other Goodies

JAT Member Discount: JAT members receive a 1,000-yen discount on all non-free meeting tickets. Do not use the provided promotional code if you are not a JAT member. Click here to join JAT and become eligible for the discount.

 

Friday Lunch: Join other meeting attendees from 11:30 to 12:45 for an informal bento lunch. You must obtain a "6/20 Bento Lunch" ticket to attend.

 

Joint Networking Event: JATLAW, JATINT, and JATPHARMA will get together on Friday afternoon for a joint networking event. Bring your inexhaustible stack of meishi. Refreshments and prizes will be provided.

 

Bag Check Area: If you arrive in Tokyo on Friday, come straight to the venue and drop off your suitcases and other belongings in the JATPHARMA meeting room. Be sure to keep your valuables with you.

 

Multi-SIG Ticket: Looking for small doses of interpreting, pharma, AND law? Purchase a JATPHARMA ticket for multi-session access. You are welcome to quietly move from room to room on Friday afternoon provided the rooms are not full.

 

IJET Zenyasai Express: Groups of attendees will leave the venue by taxi and bus and on foot for the IJET Zenyasai, which starts in nearby Shibuya at 18:30.

Important Information

Registration for the Friday meetings includes afternoon refreshments. Please sign up for only one Friday meeting (although you are free to move from room to room on Friday afternoon). If you want to attend on both Thursday and Friday, obtain a Thursday JATTOOLS Meeting ticket and a ticket to the Friday meeting you wish to attend.

 

Registration will close at 23:00 on Friday, June 13 to give the organizers time to print out nametags and make other preparations. If there are any spots remaining, you may register on site (cash only, exact change required) but will not receive a printed nametag or program.

 

The deadline for cancellations is 23:00 on June 10 JST. Please notify the organizers by e-mail to cancel. Reimbursement will not be provided for cancellations made after this date.
