Toshie Okabe was born in Tokyo, where, at the age of four, she began classical ballet training.
She encountered the Mitzvah Technique at a Tokyo workshop given by Amelia Itcush, a former dancer with the Toronto Dance Theatre. In 1987, Toshie moved to Canada to take the Mitzvah Technique Teacher Training Program run by the founder of the technique, M. Cohen-Nehemia. She continued to train with the National Ballet School of Canada and performed with the Ballet Jorgen.
Toshie works from her own studio in downtown Toronto teaching to a wide variety of students in private lessons and has taught group classes at institutions such as George Brown College, Ryerson Polytechnical University, and The University of Toronto. Toshie established the Japan Mitzvah Technique in 2002 and she spends every summer in Japan teaching individual and group lessons and training teachers.
