Thirty Years Before the Mast—Reflections on a Career in Translation
This presentation will be a semiautobiographical look at 30 years of changes in technology and how they have affected both the process and business of translation. Although some of the content will be retrospective, it will serve as background information for a prospective look at how technology is likely to affect translators in the future. I will pay particular attention to freelancing, and how freelancers need to find a comfortable balance between acquiring a reliable source of income and maintaining flexibility in an ever-changing market to maximize profits.
