This year’s theme, On Stage or Backstage—翻訳通訳の可視性, invites you to consider visibility in the translation and interpretation industry. Conversations on visibility of the translator and interpreter often boil down to “the less visible, the better,” but is it really that simple?

We hope to hear discussions on when a language professional should step forward on stage, or when they may want to stay behind the curtains, as well as how we can shine a spotlight on the field of translation and interpreting. Here are some possible facets of the theme to engage with:

  • Is it beneficial to the translator to be visible in their work? Are they ever truly invisible?
  • Is the interpreter always visible? Is greater invisibility always a desired goal to strive for?
  • How can language professionals make themselves seen by potential clients?
  • How does the general public view language professionals, and are there any ways language professionals can mold their and the industry’s image?
  • Should a language professional comport themselves differently if they are more visible versus less?
  • Have perceptions or expectations of language professionals or the industry as a whole changed over time, and, if so, how do language professionals adapt to changing norms?
  • Are there any groups or issues that lack visibility within the industry, and what can be done about this?

These topics are meant as suggestions, and we welcome individual takes on the theme of On Stage or Backstage—翻訳通訳の可視性 and look forward to receiving your proposal.

Please use the link below and fill in the form to submit your application. The deadline for applications is 3 March, 2023.

Speakers will be offered an honorarium of ¥25,000 and a travel stipend to help offset the costs of travel. Speakers who wish to attend sessions other than their own must purchase admission as an attendee. If you have any questions, please contact the committee via email at [email protected].
