The Most Important Thing in J-to-E Translation

Understanding the Original

Translation can be roughly divided into two processes: understanding the original and expressing what you get from the original (referred to here as "information") in the target language. I have come to believe that the fi rst process is more important than the second in many translation fi elds, because conveying the information is the main role of translation. The speaker will fi rst explain the main differences between J and E and the bad writing habits of many Japanese writers, and will then discuss lots of examples you may need to understand correctly. The speaker hopes that you will recognize some tips you have not yet used when understanding the original and will apply them to provide better translations in the future.
