The Honorable George Ariyoshi

A nisei, born in Hawai‘i, a military veteran who served with the occupation forces in Japan, Governor Ariyoshi is a lawyer who served continuously for 32 years in various elective offi ces. In 1974 he was elected Governor and became the fi rst Asian-American to become Governor in the history of the U.S. He remains the longest serving Governor in Hawaiian history.

Since his Governorship, he has remained active and was appointed by President Clinton to the Advisory Council on Trade Policies and Negotiations, and by the Japanese Government to Japan Foundation Center for Global Policies. He has received the highest Order of Sacred Treasure 1st Class from Japan in addition to many other international honorary degrees and awards.
