It is not an understatement to say that the impact of improved MT models and LLMs on the translation industry has been seismic. While translators in some sectors of the industry have embraced AI, others reject it outright. The reality is that while AI technologies are not perfect, they can be put to good use in various stages of the translation process.

This session explores LLM and MT's ability to handle large volumes of text, speed up workflows, and assist with proofreading, rewriting and research tasks, alongside its limitations, such as inaccuracies, the loss of cultural nuance and the risk of over-reliance on machine-generated outputs. Importantly, it argues that rather than banning AI use, it is crucial to train new translators on how to integrate these tools effectively into their workflows while maintaining translation quality. This session aims to spark discussion on how AI might shape the future of translation and whether human translators can coexist with these advancing technologies.
