Derek Baines

Derek is responsible for overseeing Tourism Australia's marketing activities in Japan and Korea to drive demand for travel to Australia for tourism and business events. Prior to joining TA in April 2020, he spent more than 20 years at Qantas in senior positions, including Marketing Manager in Japan, General Manager Sales Development for Australia, and Head of Commercial for international route development. Other experience includes Deputy Director International, Brisbane World Expo; Australian team, Tsukuba World Expo; trading company C. Itoh & Co, Brisbane; board member, Australia-China Business Council. Derek has a BA in Modern Asian Studies (Griffith University, double major in Japanese) and a graduate certificate in writing (University of Technology Sydney). He has published two poetry collections and a novel.
