Lynne Riggs

Lynne E. Riggs began her career in 1976 in a small company translating and editing academic and periodical publications. In 1980, she helped establish the Society of Writers, Editors, and Translators (SWET) and has remained actively involved to the present day. She was a co-editor of the 2nd and 3rd editions of SWET’s Japan Style Sheet.

From the start, Riggs worked closely with co-translator Takechi Manabu, and in 1990 they founded the Center for Intercultural Communication (CIC), specializing in non-fiction publications in the social sciences and humanities.

From 1997 to 2009, Riggs served as managing editor of Monumenta Nipponica at Sophia University. From 2000 to 2015, she taught “Translation at Work” at International Christian University. Her translations include a number of scholarly books in the humanities for the International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Nichibunken), exhibition catalogues for art museums, a few works of literature, and numerous specialized volumes on Japanese culture and the arts. Starting in 2019, she has led a team of editors overseeing the quality of texts produced under the Japan Tourism Agency’s “Promoting Multilingual Support for Sightseeing Destinations around Japan.”
