The Human "Plus Alpha" in the Age of Generative AI
Interpretation is the new buzzword for the Ministry of Environment, and the Japan Tourism Agency has been releasing grants by the bucketful for explanatory texts at cultural heritage sites. Unfortunately, many projects like these that are ostensibly for inbound tourists end up flopping as companies try to implement LLM technology to save on cost and time. In this talk and workshop, I intend to answer the question: What is the human value when creating expository or promotional texts for non-Japanese people, particularly with regard to cultural heritage, inbound tourism, and national parks? Through case studies and interactive editing tasks participants will learn what skills they bring to the table as professional wordsmiths and how to better represent their "plus alpha" even when clients want to use AI.
