Interpreters in all languages are invited to attend the Sunday Interpreter Program at the 34th International Japanese-English Translation Conference (IJET-34) in Melbourne.
The conference theme is:
Communication, Connection, Creativity: 人にしかできないこと
The Interpreter Program on Sunday, 6 September, is open to all interested interpreters and language professionals, not just interpreters working in the Japanese-English language pair.

Sunday's Interpreter Program
Rethinking human interpreter ethics through consultation interpreting (相談通訳)
Delivered in English by Maho Fukuno
How should interpreters work in the age of AI? Maho will explore contrasting approaches to interpreter ethics in Australia and Japan, examining the role of impartiality, advocacy and human connection in community interpreting.
Interpreter JAM: Interpreting as interaction
Facilitated in Japanese and English by Heather Glass, Anna Berry Fukuda and Rita Ormsby
In this session, participants will explore interpreting techniques and concepts in new ways while examining the humanness of interpreted interaction. The session will focus on adjusting physical, digital and personal space to maximise interpreting performance and support interaction management.
On the balance of probabilities
Delivered in English by Julie Segal
Drawing on her experience interpreting in the courts, Julie will examine the realities of contemporary court interpreting, including remote assignments, workforce challenges and the growing impact of technology.
Offence as intimacy: Understanding mock aggression in cross-cultural communication
Delivered in English by Xi Dai
Xi Dai will examine how different languages signal closeness, intimacy and social relationships, and offer practical insights into interpreting tone, intent and interpersonal meaning. Her presentation will interest both translators and interpreters who work between English and Chinese or Japanese.
Closing panel: Where do we go from here?
Delivered in Japanese and English by Tony Atkinson, Sakigake Kamimura, Sara Kitaoji and Hideaki Maruoka, and moderated by Julian Kitchen.
